18th century blog

On the website of the Finnish national gallery you can search artworks by time period (just click “artworks”), and there are lots of 18th century ones.

Diary of a Mantua Maker is a blog that is incredibly helpful if you make your own 18th century clothes. There’s lots of very detailed information on how to make different garments and even information about accurate techniques and stitches, the kind of stuff I’m too lazy to properly learn about :)

I came across the Spanish museum Museo del traje’s website and figured out how to search their collection. They have lots of beautiful 18th century clothes. Click the picture above to go directly to the search engine.

If you know Spanish you won’t need any help, but if not, I wrote “indumentaria historica” (a term I found elsewhere on the site and seemed to mean something like historical clothing) in the “Búsqueda General” search field and 1700-1799 in “Datación”. You can’t write directly in the “Datación” field, you click the “Fechas/Periodos” button and write the first and last date you want in the two “Año” fields and then press “Aceptar”. Finally press the “Buscar” button.

That seemed to get all the 18th century clothes, but if you know Spanish and a better way to search let me know in the comments.

Historia is a beautiful new Swedish history blog, mainly focused on the 18th century. Click the picture to go there!

Here’s another great database to check out. Joconde is a catalogue of French museum collections. Go to the advanced search and write 18e siècle in the “Période/Datation” box and you’ll get all the 18th century stuff. I found lots of great paintings, objects and clothes.

Une Collection Francaise is a blog containing “a collection of French miniature portraits owned by a French collector who wishes to share them with art lovers”, and most of them are 18th century. Click the picture of Lamballe to go there.

I posted earlier about the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 18th century European dress page, but you should check out their costume database as well.

The website of the upcoming movie The Duchess is up with lots of photos and information. My favourite thing about it is that many of the costumes are presented with detailed photos and information, I also liked the “discover” section. I have mixed feelings about this movie but mostly I can’t wait to see it! Click the picture to go to the website.

I just found these two “sister blogs”, Georgiana’s gossip guide to the 18th century, and Marie Antoinette’s gossip guide to the 18th century. Both very entertaining blogs with bits of 18th century information and lots of pictures, even some I hadn’t seen before. Check them out!

Au Cour des Roses
I don’t know the language on this site (german?) so I’m not sure if this is a society or if they hold events or you can rent them for events or something else. It’s a gorgeous site anyway with tons of beautiful photos!

Edit: They both arrange events and you can hire them for events!

The 28th and 29th June there will be an 18th century market at the Danish manor museum Gammel Estrup.

Come and visit the 1700s weekend here at Gammel Estrup, where the courtyard will be bursting with life and sound. The jugglers and fire-eaters will show what they can do, musicians will play lively old folk tunes and there are rumours that two headstrong noblemen will repeatedly get into argument and duel violently with each other. Dressed in clothes from the 1700s, the staff of the museum and a group of volunteer helpers will sell things at market stalls, serve food and drink in the coffee house and the secret bar, and ensure that there is music and entertainment.

Gustaf III:s wänner is not a society with members but a group of friends who arrange 18th century events that are open to anyone. Their philosophy seems to be fun over elitism which sounds excellent!

Slottsfrun
A Swedish website that makes and sells 18th century basic garments and accessories like shirts, corsets and pockets. They also sell used clothes from Durán textiles, although they don’t seem to have any on the site at the moment (I couldn’t find any anyway).

There is also some general 18th century information and trivia on the site, as well as photos.

Gunnebo slottsspel is an 18th century event held at the Gunnebo castle outside of Göteborg. From the website:
