Pelisse

Pelisse

I started making this pelisse last winter for the 12th night ball. I raced to get it finished and didn’t quite make it, but it was still wearable enough for the ball.

After the ball I wasn’t as motivated to finish it so it’s been in the same state ever since, but now I have finally done the final trimming and the arm holes.

I used the instructions at Marquise but made it a bit shorter and less wide. The pattern is from the 1760s but it’s a very basic shape that stayed very similar for several decades.

Portrait of a lady said to be Lady Bessborough.

John Downman was an English portrait painter and he’s one of my favourite 18th century artists. He made lots of beautiful little portrait drawings.

As always, let me know if you know where to find more or bigger pictures or perhaps know of a book featuring his work.

Journal des Luxus und der Moden

I found this through Mme. du Jard. This website has almost every issue of a German fashion and luxury journal called Journal des Luxus und der Moden, from 1786 to 1827. There are plenty of fashion plates, and if you read German I’m guessing the texts are very interesting. Just click “blättern” and follow the links for every year and month and you will get to the journals.

I found this through a livejournal entry by Lisette la cousette. It’s a huge database of scanned fashion prints of which many are 18th century, and it’s absolutely fantastic! Click the picture to go to the livejournal entry where you follow the instructions to see the prints.
