I feel terrible for neglecting this blog so much lately, but here’s a great 18th century blog I just discovered. At the Sign of the Golden Scissors talks about 18th century costuming and has some great articles about 18th century clothing with a focus on historical accuracy.
tag:18thcenturyblog.com,2008-10-19:Post/7552011-09-26T11:06:44+02:002011-09-26T11:06:44+02:00Before the Automobile

I just found this via Isis’ Wardrobe.

Before the Automobile is an absolutely amazing costuming blog by a Finnish girl with some of the best 18th century costumes I’ve seen. She also makes beautiful 19th century costumes.

My favourite post is one about making her own 18th century shoes, something I have been planning for some time. Maybe now I’ll finally get around to making a pair!
tag:18thcenturyblog.com,2008-10-19:Post/7522011-08-15T09:58:39+02:002011-08-15T09:58:39+02:00Shoemaking workshop in New York

I just found this on A Fashionable Frolick. If you’re near New York you can sign up for a week long 18th century shoemaking workshop, August 20-27. Head over to A Fashionable Frolick to read more!

I would absolutely love to do this, learning to make my own shoes is probably highest on my 18th century wishlist, but unfortunately it’s not possible for me to get to New York that soon.
tag:18thcenturyblog.com,2008-10-19:Post/7422011-01-06T20:08:30+01:002014-01-07T12:08:29+01:00Twelfth night ball

Yesterday I went to Gustafs skål’s Twelfth night ball, and I had a wonderful time! I also met Isis, who had a fantastic foresty costume, and Madame Berg, who looked amazing, for the first time. I forgot to take any photos but my boyfriend took a few of my costume when I got back home. I wore the polonaise with a new but unfinished pelisse (the hood trim and armholes are missing). I was planning to make a matching muff as well but didn’t have time.

I just finished this polonaise and I’m so happy with it! I have to do one small alteration to improve the fit of the “bodice” but otherwise it’s done.

Edit: The photos are taken in my bedroom.

It’s based on a late 1770s polonaise pattern in The Cut of Women’s Clothes: 1600-1930 by Norah Waugh (diagram XXI), and I based the colours and trim mainly on this polonaise from ca 1775-80. As you can see this has lace as well and I might add that to mine in the future.

While working on my dress I realised it perfectly matches the exterior of my favourite 18th century building, Kina slott. I’ll have to go there to take some photos one day. The wig doesn’t exactly match my own hair colour but I hope I can hide that with more powder.

The back. Hopefully it won’t be this baggy at the sides when I’ve improved the fit. (The weird white thing showing in the neck is a camisole I wore under my stays since I’m altering my chemise and couldn’t wear it for the photos.)
tag:18thcenturyblog.com,2008-10-19:Post/6992009-08-04T17:13:30+02:002014-01-07T14:44:07+01:00Photos from “Lyss till 1700-talet”

I’ve been working on this outfit for a couple of weeks and now it’s finally finished enough to use. I still have to line the jacket and add more gold fringe around the “skirt” part of the jacket (peplum?), but otherwise it’s all done. It’s a late 1780s pierrot jacket from The Cut of Women’s Clothes: 1600-1930 by Norah Waugh and a simple sheer jupe made from no pattern at all. I’ll hopefully be wearing this to Skansen next weekend.

Does anyone have any tips on where to find really sheer fabric to use for a fichu, or know what type of fabric to look for? All the really sheer fabrics I find tend to look very obviously synthetic. I don’t mind if it’s a not a period correct fabric as long as it looks like one.

The collar was my own addition, mainly inspired by this amazing painting by Vestier, one of my favourites. It also inspired the colouring, although her dress or jacket is a lot greener.
