I feel terrible for neglecting this blog so much lately, but here’s a great 18th century blog I just discovered. At the Sign of the Golden Scissors talks about 18th century costuming and has some great articles about 18th century clothing with a focus on historical accuracy.

Before the Automobile

I just found this via Isis’ Wardrobe.

Before the Automobile is an absolutely amazing costuming blog by a Finnish girl with some of the best 18th century costumes I’ve seen. She also makes beautiful 19th century costumes.

My favourite post is one about making her own 18th century shoes, something I have been planning for some time. Maybe now I’ll finally get around to making a pair!

Rockin’ the Rococo

Posted May 11, 2009 at 19:00 CEST in Blogs, Fashion, and Links.

Rockin’ the Rococo is the blog of a girl who’s doing a big project on 18th century clothing. She has reproduced the wardrobe of an 18th century middle class Englishwoman using only period accurate materials and techniques, even doing the sewing while dressed in 18th century clothes and only by daylight or candlelight. Be sure to check out the exhibition page to see the presentation of the finished project. The process of each garment is covered in detail as well which is very helpful for other costumers!

Diary of a Mantua Maker

Diary of a Mantua Maker is a blog that is incredibly helpful if you make your own 18th century clothes. There’s lots of very detailed information on how to make different garments and even information about accurate techniques and stitches, the kind of stuff I’m too lazy to properly learn about :)

I just found these two “sister blogs”, Georgiana’s gossip guide to the 18th century, and Marie Antoinette’s gossip guide to the 18th century. Both very entertaining blogs with bits of 18th century information and lots of pictures, even some I hadn’t seen before. Check them out!
